The Great Compassion Dharani, Dabei Zhou in Chinese, is said to have been spoken by Guanyin. The text follows the Taishō Tripiṭaka, no. 1060, from the CBETA digital canon, with the Taishō's own numbering of 82 phrases; the layout is our own. Most chanting books divide it into 84 phrases and differ in a few characters; when reciting, follow the book of your own temple.

What a dharani is

The explanations below are in our own words, to help first-time readers. The dharani itself is not translated.

Dharani is a Sanskrit word meaning roughly "that which holds": a formula that gathers and keeps the teaching. By tradition, a dharani is recited in its Sanskrit sounds, written here in Chinese characters, and is not translated.

The sutra describes many benefits of reciting it. At Ease Temple only presents the text and its source and makes no promise of what reciting it brings; for deeper study, please learn from a teacher.

At At Ease Temple

You can draw water at the Pure Spring and carry it slowly to the Offering Basin before Guanyin, or sit in the Meditation Pavilion and recite the dharani silently.
